Start Smart Workshop

A solution to the salary gap between women and men is to provide women with skills in salary negotiation.  AAUW’s Start Smart workshop is focused on women about the enter the workforce.  Work Smart is directed at women already in the workforce, who may have never negotiated their salaries, even when offered promotions.

Typically, AAUW-Socorro has a booth at the career fairs in September and February.  We sign up students for on-campus Start Smart workshops.  In addition, we talk to women recruiting for companies, government laboratories, and universities.  The discussion with recruiters is started by asking if they have ever negotiated their salaries; most have not.  We provide them with information on the Work Smart course.

Diversity Matters: The 19th Amendment and Beyond’
Marie Johnson, Diversity Chair

We were pleased to host Marie Johnson (AAUW New Mexico Diversity Chair) on Oct. 25th, who  spoke on ‘Diversity Matters: The 19th Amendment and Beyond.’  We partnered with two student groups, Women in Computer Science (WiSC) and the Society for Women Engineers, as well as our Title IX office.  Approximately 35 people attended; a lively and informative discussion of women’s issue on campus ensued.
