The AAUW has worked with New Mexico Tech and the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources to host Tech Trek for three years. Last year, because of COVID-19 safety concerns, the AAUW decided not to host the 2020 Tech Trek Camp at New Mexico Tech. Before Tech Trek was officially postponed, Socorro AAUW Branch members did assist with reading essays and interviewing as part of the camper selection process. The sixty chosen campers did not have the opportunity to participate in Tech Trek on campus, but instead were sent boxes with activities that they could do with their families. These boxes included items such as a TI-84 calculator and a Kindle with pre-loaded STEM workshop information. These boxes cost the AAUW Tech Trek organization $300.00 each and were mailed to various locations across New Mexico.
Depending on pandemic conditions and other factors in 2021, the AAUW Tech Trek organizing committee intend to present the 2021 Tech Trek as a two-week workshop at the New Mexico Tech campus. 2020 Tech Trek girls will attend camp at NMT for one week during the summer of 2021 and girls chosen during the 2021 interview process will attend during a different week in the summer of 2021.
